How to Get MRT Card & use it for Bus & Train
I recently visited Singapore and found myself amazed by the efficiency and affordability of its Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system. Compared to using Uber or Grab taxi services, the MRT was a far more economical and convenient option.
Here’s a point-by-point guide on how to get and use an MRT card in Singapore based on my experience.
1. Types of MRT Cards
- EZ-Link Card: The most common type, accepted on all public buses and trains.
- NETS FlashPay Card: Similar to EZ-Link but with added retail payment features.
2. Where to Buy an MRT Card
- TransitLink Ticket Offices: Available at most MRT stations.
- Passenger Service Centers: Located at major MRT stations.
- 7-Eleven Stores: Found throughout Singapore.
- Automated Machines: Some stations have these for quick purchases.
3. How to Top-Up Your MRT Card
- General Ticketing Machines (GTMs): Located at all MRT stations.
- TransitLink Ticket Offices: Another option for top-ups.
- 7-Eleven Stores: Convenient for quick top-ups.
- DBS/POSB ATMs: If you have a DBS/POSB account, you can top-up here.
4. Using the MRT Card on Trains
- Tap In: At the entry gantry, tap your card on the card reader.
- Board the Train: Follow signs to your platform.
- Tap Out: Don’t forget to tap your card at the exit gantry at your destination.
5. Using the MRT Card on Buses
- Tap In: Tap your card on the reader next to the driver when boarding.
- Ride the Bus: Take a seat or hold onto the handrails.
- Tap Out: Tap your card again on the reader before alighting.
6. Checking Card Balance
- Via GTMs: Insert your card and follow the prompts.
- Via Mobile App: Use the EZ-Link app or NETS FlashPay app.
7. Lost or Damaged Card
- Report: Go to any TransitLink Ticket Office or Passenger Service Center.
- Replacement: You can get a new card for a nominal fee.
8. Refunds and Card Expiry
- Refunds: Available at TransitLink Ticket Offices.
- Card Expiry: Check the date on the card; you can exchange an expired card for a new one.
During my stay, I had the convenience of staying near the Jurong East MRT station at Expat Corporate’s service apartment in Singapore. The location was ideal for exploring the city using the MRT system, making my trip even more enjoyable and hassle-free. You may download SG’s whole MRT map from official website here.
If you’re planning a visit, I highly recommend making the MRT your primary mode of transportation.
