Newspapers and Journals Published during India’s Freedom Struggle period

There were numerous Newspapers and Journals published in India during the freedom struggle years. Bengal Gazette founded by James Augustus Hicky (Irish) was the first printed English Newspaper published in India. Bengal Gazette was published on January 29th 1780 and it was a weekly newspaper. This Newspaper was an inspiration for the Indians to write their own Newspapers.

Apart from participation in freedom struggle, our leaders and freedom fighters founded several Newspapers and Journals. Some of them were also the Chief Editor of their newspapers. They gave much importance to the newspapers because it was the fast and efficient tool for feeding freedom thoughts among the people. Udant Martand (The Rising Sun) was the first Hindi weekly Newspaper founded by Pt. Jugal Kishore Shukla. It was published on May 30th 1826.
